These rules must be observed by students in summer jobs

Many students want to supplement their pocket money with summer jobs. Six to ten euros hourly wages are possible in many industries. But not everyone is allowed to do every job. Which rules students have to observe when doing summer jobs and how you can get good jobs now.

Eat. This week the federal government passed the statutory minimum wage of 8.50 euros per hour. It is to apply from 2015 and be binding for all industries. But one passage in the law excludes one income group: the young holiday jobbers. The minimum wage only takes effect from the age of 18.

In other words, if you want to supplement your pocket money with a holiday job next summer, you will not notice the minimum wage. Nevertheless, there are summer jobs with hourly wages that can be over EUR 8.50.

Six to ten euros hourly wages

Depending on the industry, the payment is usually between six and ten euros per hour. A not inconsiderable increase in pocket money for schoolchildren. There is a lot to be earned, especially in the construction industry and in the handicrafts, i.e. where people work hard physically – up to 14 euros are possible in some handicraft businesses, according to the industry.

However, these jobs are more intended for students, because most students are not allowed to do physical work according to the Youth Labor Protection Act. „Young people are only allowed to do work that is not physically overwhelming and does not pose any health risks,” said NRW Labor Minister Guntram Schneider (SPD), explaining the rules.

Most student jobs are in the hospitality and retail sectors. At the Hovelmann beverage group in Duisburg, for example, there are two summer jobs for schoolchildren. www.bookmark-step.win

Sorting material in the tool store and helping out wherever there is a need – this is everyday life for young jobbers in the beverage trade.

Nobody needs to have previous knowledge, for example in logistics, or manual skills. You only have to be at least 16 years old. “That is actually the only condition. Unfortunately, both positions have already been taken this summer, ”says company spokesman Thomas Munzer.

Jobs in retail are popular

Heinz-Jurgen GuB from the Essen Chamber of Commerce and Industry knows about the popularity of summer jobs in retail, whether in the beverage market or the jeans store. “They are relatively easy jobs that both boys and girls can do. And I know that chain stores in particular like to take such people as short-term temporary help during the vacation time of the employees. „

The catering industry, especially beer gardens, also like to hire students to help out in the summer. However, age also plays a major role here: all activities that have to do with serving alcohol must not be carried out by minors. Likewise, under 18-year-olds are only allowed to work until 10 p.m., 15-year-olds only until 8 p.m. It is questionable whether every restaurateur adheres to the specifications so precisely. Because when the beer garden is overcrowded in summer and the staff is scarce, such a limit can be crossed quickly.

Imagine it makes sense

If you are still looking for a job quickly, you should try your luck on site at the companies. Peter Acht, Managing Director of the Trade Association of North Rhine-Westphalia, knows that then the chances are the highest. „And who knows, maybe a potential apprenticeship position will be found right away.”

By the way: light work such as tutoring or babysitting is permitted for everyone under the age of 15. These can be practiced all year round and for two hours a day.
